Brooklyn Heights was originally settled by Dutch farmers in the
17th century. Later, George Washington established his
headquarters at the foot of Montague Street because of the clear
view of the harbor and had several forts built in the area.
Brooklyn Heights became the first suburb of New York in 1814
when Robert Fulton began his ferry service there. Famous
writers and artists such as Norman Mailer, Walt Whitman and
Tennessee Williams have called this exclusive neighborhood their
home.
The
Promenade, over one-third of a mile long and set above the
Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, offers a magnificent views of the
Brooklyn Bridge, the East River and lower Manhattan.
Originally designed and built in the 1940's, this exclusively
pedestrian walkway fronts numerous mansions and brownstone
townhouses, some more than 150 years old. Brooklyn Heights
was the first community in the city to be designed as an
historic district under the new Landmarks Preservation Law in
1965.
Paved
with a unique pattern of natural cleft bluestone and hexagonal
asphalt pavers, the Promenade underwent a $2.7 million
renovation recently. PASVALCO exactly matched the
bluestone paving originally quarried in the 1940's in pattern,
texture and shading with Reed-Free New York State Natural Cleft
Bluestone.
Jogging or strolling along this tree-lined Promenade, visitors
experience a relaxing, peaceful close-up view of one of the
world's great cities.
